In Brooklyn and New York more generally, there’s this thing about the Gowanus Canal. Mention it and people laugh or recoil, take your pick. Yes, the Gowanus Canal is a polluted waterway in the heart of the borough of churches but, more than that, it has the worse PR this side of Agent Orange (look that up, you Millennials.)
I remember watching the sadly-departed television series “Bored to Death” a few years ago. A couple of thugs threatened to drop the hero into the Gowanus Canal and he acted as though they were lowering the guillotine. Okay, so the Gowanus has this outsized reputation as ugly personified. The thing is, I see it every day as I go to work from the F train el and it doesn’t look so bad. I thought the Gowanus needed a facelift of sorts so I photographed it yesterday on a glorious day full of sunshine.
Take a look at these photos. Do they change your mind just a bit? Okay so I helped them out with a bit of saturation and tweaking but the Gowanus can be your friend. Just take a walk over the charming Carroll Street drawbridge or visit Lavender Lake bar (which gets it name from the oily slick of gunk often floating on top of the Gowanus.) You’ll see. Keep saying to yourself….it’s only a canal….
